We tested 12 linear motors from 6 manufacturers on a custom dynamometer. The best units held force deviation within ±3% over a 10-minute continuous run. The worst dropped 22% after 30 seconds. The difference was not in the motor design — it was in the coil winding quality and the feedback control algorithm.
Here is what we learned: a voice coil actuator with closed-loop hall-effect feedback consistently outperforms stepper-based linear actuators for microneedling applications. The reason is that stepper motors operate in discrete steps, creating a micro-oscillation that translates to uneven needle penetration at high cycle speeds. Voice coil actuators, by contrast, produce continuous linear force with near-zero cogging.

The controller samples position at 10 kHz and adjusts current 200 times per second. The takeaway: when you evaluate a microneedling OEM partner, ask for the motor force linearity curve, not just the peak force spec. If they cannot produce one, they have not tested it.
