How to Evaluate a Microneedle Factory Without Flying to China

When a brand approaches us for OEM production, the first question they ask is usually about price per unit. The second question is about MOQ. Rarely does anyone ask about the tooling and mold investment until after the price negotiation has stalled. This ordering of priorities often leads to frustration on both sides.

A microneedling cartridge requires three sets of tooling: the needle assembly fixture, the hub injection mold, and the final assembly jig. Each of these tools has a life cycle measured in tens of thousands of cycles. An injection mold for the hub typically lasts 200,000 to 500,000 shots before the cavity detail degrades beyond tolerance. When that happens, the mold needs re-cutting or replacement.

The tooling cost is typically amortized into the unit price. Most factories quote based on a tooling amortization schedule of 12 to 24 months. If your sales volume does not meet the forecast, the factory either extends the amortization period or adjusts the unit price upward. This is why understanding the tooling cost structure is essential before signing an OEM agreement.
