Target Value Below
The target Ra value is below 0.15 microns. Above 0.25 microns Ra, the needle drags during insertion and the micro-channel walls show visible tearing in histological sections. The grinding process uses a three-step sequence: rough grind, finish grind, and polish.
Rough Grind Removes
The rough grind removes bulk material and establishes the bevel geometry. The finish grind refines the bevel to near-final dimensions. The Polish step uses a 1-micron diamond suspension to achieve the final surface finish.
Each Step Uses
Each step uses a dedicated grinding wheel with controlled grit size and feed rate. The entire grinding sequence takes 18 seconds per needle at tbphp. The cycle time is longer than what some factories use because we prioritize surface finish over throughput.
Faster Grind Cycle
A faster grind cycle produces a rougher surface. The tradeoff is invisible to the end user but measurable in insertion force testing.
