Why We Do Not Drop-Ship Single Cartridges and What That Means for Distributors


A European distributor called me last quarter with a problem. They had moved 12,000 cartridges in the first three months, then returns started coming back. Customers complained the needles felt like they were dragging rather than gliding through the skin. The cartridge design had not changed. The steel batch had. This is the kind of problem that is invisible on a spec sheet but obvious on the skin.

Our production line runs 100% in-house — from raw 316L medical-grade stainless steel wire to the finished EO-sterilized cartridge. We do not outsource needle grinding, hub molding, or final assembly. This gives us complete control over four critical parameters that most brands leave to their contract manufacturer.

First, needle tip concentricity. If the needle tip is off-center by more than 2 microns, the penetration path through the stratum corneum becomes asymmetric. In multi-needle arrays, this asymmetry compounds. We have measured cartridges from major brands where tip deviation reached 8 microns. At that tolerance, some needles in the same array barely break the skin while others penetrate too deep.

Second, wall thickness consistency at the bevel. The cutting edge of a microneedle is essentially a miniature hypodermic needle. Our EDM profiling process holds wall thickness variation to ±0.5 microns across the entire bevel face. This is what gives clean penetration with less drag on insertion.

Third, the needle-to-hub bond. We use a two-stage ultrasonic welding process followed by a medical-grade UV-cured adhesive fillet. The pull-off strength averages 4.2 Newtons per needle — roughly triple the minimum we set for safety. Every batch is pull-tested on a random sample of 32 cartridges before sterilization.

Fourth, EO sterilization validation. We run a full BI (biological indicator) cycle for every sterilization load. The SAL (sterility assurance level) at our facility is 10^-6, which exceeds the ISO 11135 requirement for medical devices.

These four parameters are not mysterious. They are just expensive to implement and tedious to maintain. Most OEM buyers never ask about them because they do not know the questions to ask.

We publish these manufacturing details because we believe informed buyers make better decisions for their brands. The microneedling market is growing fast, and rising demand brings both opportunity and risk. Partnerships built on real data tend to outlast those built on price alone.
